Dr. Joseph Gomez - House #4
800 South
Main Street
This house was built in 1905 for Beckman
Rouse, an officer of the Geneva Preserving Company and
Ontario Coal, in the fashionable Shingle style of the time.
Shingle evolved from the Queen Anne, which is characterized
by the application of classical ornamentation to medieval
forms. This house displays the wide porch, spindle work and
conical tower of the Queen Anne period.
Walking in
through the Dutch front door, one quickly notices the large,
dramatic stairway landing and stained glass window. Other
Dutch accents can be seen on the second floor in the delft
fireplace surrounds. Cardiologist Dr. Joseph Gomez has added
several contemporary amenities, and visitors will notice the
nice touches added by the presence of the doctor’s two
preteen daughters.
The spacious home of more than 3600
square feet has three floors for living and a full basement
which will one day include a wine cellar, just one of the
doctor’s future plans. The interesting house has a library
and a laundry room which is conveniently upstairs on the way
to the attic. This latter room, which once held a hot tub,
is an ideal playroom for the youngsters.
Not to miss - a
lovely and attractive addition to the house in the past
three years is the hardscape stone patio and pool, which
eliminated a deep slope at the rear of the
home.
