House #3, Rare 18th Century House, 9-11 Park Avenue, Geneva
Built in 1796, this edifice of post-and-beam construction was erected at the same time as Charles Williamson’s Geneva Hotel in order to be a residence for hotel workers, such as cooks, coachmen, and draymen. All travelers heading west from Utica would have had to stay at the Hotel. This, then, is the oldest house in Geneva and was constructed as a duplex, with four fireplaces and a bread oven on each side.
The building, which was somewhat remodeled circa 1815-1820, has a rubble stone and brick foundation. All bricks were made on-site and woods of elm, oak, and pine were harvested locally. Directly west of the house is where the hotel stable once stood.
Owner John Brennan is reusing all available old materials to refurnish the two-story, eight room house. The renovation is now finishing its third year, and Mr. Brennan is doing most of the painstaking work himself. Upon close examination one can see the original details and how the renovation matches.
When the work is complete. Mr. Brennan will live in one half; the other will be a bed and breakfast. The house will be decorated in authentic 18th Century fashion as much as possible. Much research has been done to assure accurate details. For example, the exterior will feature copper gutters, varnished porches, and green colonial colors.
Not to be missed: artifacts unearthed, including a tintype photograph, silverware, and a woman’s shoe excavated from an original chimney. It was a colonial good luck charm to place one in a chimney.
